Importance of Seasonal Variation in Hawaiian Mushroom (Agaricomycetes) Basidiomata Production for Biodiversity Discovery and Conservation

The Hawaiian Islands have a relatively well-known funga for tropical location, yet there are over 400 species of mushrooms (Agaricomycetes) in the archipelago that remain to be documented. Importantly, International Union Conservation Nature (IUCN) recently evaluated six endemic islands as threatened with extinction. To improve detection biodiversity discovery and better monitor archipelago—where many localities lack strong annual precipitation patterns associated an obvious season increased mushroom basidiomata production—we examined phenology mushrooms. Monthly richness was determined from literature review abundance online data repositories. Phenological were separately explored native differing elevation categories. Despite consistent monthly temperatures areas regular rainfall, we found generally exhibit uneven temporal production: highest January lowest February April, then usually increase May July at elevated levels through December. This pattern does not occur when considering only, nor examining stratified by rainfall Increased low (<1,000 m), dry mm rainfall/year) locations on O‘ahu low, mesic (1,000–2,500 Kaua‘i positively correlated rainfall. Phenology macrofungal sporocarp production should potentially included threat assessments IUCN via traditional surveying methods.
